A practice nurse has an essential role to play in delivering care through general practice. They may work alongside other healthcare professionals including doctors. Their main responsibilities can include chaperoning patient consultations within the surgery, carrying out physical examinations, investigatory procedures and cervical smears. Monitor chronic illness/disease (asthma/ diabetes for example) treating wounds & applying/ removing dressings. A practice nurse will take patient samples, swabs and specimens, check pulses, temperatures and blood pressure also administer immunisations, vaccinations (for example for influenza) and infant injections.
They may also provide advice, education and information about health conditions and ailments, stopping smoking and losing weight
